Canopy is home to an incredible community of artists, galleries, and arts organizations. This month, we’re spotlighting Austin Clay Arts, a welcoming, all-inclusive ceramics studio fostering creativity and community in the heart of East Austin.
Founded by Justin Goodall, Austin Clay Arts is rooted in nearly two decades of experience across clay programs and studios nationwide. Justin’s practice spans abstract sculpture and functional work, including lighting, tile, and tableware. Becoming a parent shifted his focus away from high-end production and toward a more grounded, nurturing approach to both life and making.
His journey with clay began with a single ceramics class at Elon University, where he discovered the transformative magic of the medium. He later earned his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and went on to lead professional and personal studio programs in North Carolina, Chicago, Michigan, New York City, and now Austin.
Today, Austin Clay Arts offers high-quality instruction in a relaxed, supportive environment within the bustling Canopy arts community. The studio provides everything students need, with no hidden costs, allowing participants to focus fully on learning, creating, and connecting with like-minded creatives. Workshops and classes are available for children and adults of all skill levels, with instructors who ensure everyone feels both challenged and confident.
Membership is currently on a waitlist, but interested artists are encouraged to join when enrollment reopens. For questions, visit their FAQ page or reach out at info@austinclayarts.com.
