Art.Science.Gallery. announces the opening of The Birds, an art exhibition about ornithology. Works in the exhibition explore topics such as bird migration, communication, taxonomy, feeding behavior, natural history, flight behavior, bird diversity and conservation.
Featured artists include: Carol Cunningham (San Antonio), Carrie Carlson (Orland Park, IL), Emily Coleman (Austin), Kim Heise (Parkland, FL), Lauren Rochell (Austin), Lisa Rawlinson (Austin), Pat Falconer (Austin), Pen Brady (Bunceton, MO), Rachel Ramirez (Olhão, Portugal), and Sarah St Laurent (Austin).
This exhibition is dedicated to ornithologist James “Sandy” Beach (1947-2015), who was a mentor and friend to gallery founder/director Dr. Hayley Gillespie. Together, they ventured into nature with a sense of fun and discovery. The gallery asks students and friends of Sandy to send in photographs and stories for a memorial wall to Sandy’s contributions to our study of nature, which will grow throughout the exhibit.
Proceeds from this exhibit will help establish a new scholarship fund managed by the gallery in Sandy’s honor: The Sandy Beach Award for Natural History to help support the education and development of future generations of natural historians who are current students at Austin Community College.
